Welcome to the nano scale. Nanoscale is where properties differ significantly from those at a larger scale. The strange world of nanoscience can take you into atoms and beyond the stars. A new horizon has begun for mankind in creating new technologies and one day eradicating diseases. Synopsis Nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize our lives and to provide technological solutions to our problems in energy, the environment and medicine. To fully realize this potential we need to be able to control the synthesis of nanoparticles, the construction of nano-devices, the characterization of materials on the nanoscale, as well as to understand the effects of these things on our environment and our health. This conference will bring together physicists, chemists and materials scientists at the forefront of the science of making and characterizing materials at the nanoscale, with biologists and biochemists at the forefront of applying these discoveries in the medical and biological sphere. It serves two purposes. First to bring together research active basic and applied scientists from different backgrounds in an intimate atmosphere to learn about needs and scientific advances in the forefront of their respective fields and to build interactions and collaborations. Second, it will provide a rich educational opportunity for students and young researchers attending from different scientific backgrounds. The talks are designed to be comprehensible to someone outside the ...

In this episode of O Wow Moments from the Children's Museum of Houston, Mr. O is up against the supervillain Dr. Blot and his desire to stain everyone! Actually, it's just a fun excuse to examine how nanotechnology and nanoscale science are applied to create clothes that are stain resistant using nature's lotus leaf as inspiration!

Getting a Sense of Smell

Posted by admin on September 2nd, 2011

In this episode of O Wow Moments featuring Mr. O from the Children's Museum of Houston, we play a little game called "Guess That Smell!" where we explore how our sense of smell works. It turns out that we are nanosensors - our noses actually sense molecues - things close to a billionth of a meter in size! But, as you'll see in this video, be careful about with whom you play the game...

Molecular Gastronomy

Architecture in Nano Space. Sir Harry Kroto

Posted by admin on August 3rd, 2011

Lecture given by Sir Harry Kroto, FRS HonFRSE, Royal Society Research Professor, School of Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science, University of Sussex on 27 June 2007 Multidisciplinary research has developed the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Molecules that "do things"are now being made. New experimental approaches focused on how atoms cluster together have led to the production of novel nanostructures and a general refocusing of research interests on controlling self-assembly process. Fascinating fundamental insights into formation mechanisms have been revealed and nanoscale devices, which parallel devices in standard engineering, are now being created. On the horizon are possible applications ranging from civil engineering to advanced molecular electronics. Supercomputers in our pockets (as well as our heads) and buildings which can easily withstand powerful hurricanes and earthquakes may be possible.

Posted by admin on June 21st, 2011

Dr. Kim Sang Woo and Layne Hartsell in dialogue about nanotechnology What is it? How does it relate to running shoes and ipods and cell phones? How small is nano? This interview involves some in-depth science and relates it to everyday things in our lives. Kim Sang Woo is a professor at Sungkyunkwan Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology. His current research is in the piezoelectric effect, graphene and in bionanoscience. Layne Hartsell is a coordinator for Seoul Global Study Group and a professor in language and bioscience at Sungkyunkwan University. His research is in the philosophy of ethics and technology related to advanced technologies and third world access. nanoscience, nanotechnology, Sungkyunkwan University, Kim Sang Woo, Layne Hartsell, Seoul Global Study Group
